EVERGLADES LAKES MOBILE HOME COMMUNITY STILL NEEDS YOUR HELP  Article Posted 10.5.05

Everglades Lakes, an over 55 mobile home community in Davie, suffered serious damage during Hurricane Katrina.  The residents are on limited incomes, and without federal assistance.  Many could not afford insurance on their properties.  Some victims were insured, but their homes were condemned. The need is urgent. If you can offer any type of assistance, please contact this web site at mac0202@bellsouth.net.

Davie Town Council Member Susan Starkey reported on 10.5.05:

"Last night I meet with the Everglades Mobile Home Association with about 200 residents.  My purpose was to assist the community and their efforts regarding the Hurricane Katrina relief and find out what their current needs are.  I was able to reach out to several of those that had damage and was able to begin their Community Emergency Response Teams.  I spoke of the efforts and difficulty of the Town to follow up with many of them...Their fears are that they will be facing an enormous loss but don't have anywhere to turn as many of them are seniors and on fixed incomes with little resources and usually NO insurance.
As a result of the article (in the Sun Sentinel on Satruday, October 1) I received about a dozen calls requesting assistance.  I will be setting up a few more HOA meeting to begin discussions about the CERT  Program and hope that we have greater interest for communities to help themselves and coordinate with the town."
