Post Hurricane Safety Tips
Post hurricane injures are preventable
Get help in removing your hurricane shutters, and take them down now that the hurricane has passed in order to prevent a fire trap. Use gloves. Be very careful about candle use. Older candles may deteriorate rapidly and pose a safety problem. Carefully follow instructions regarding use of electric generators. Generators should not be used in the garage or in the home, and should be placed away from vents and windows. Generators should not be used on any patio. Keep generators away from doors. Remember, generators require gas and other maintenance changes. Use proper gasoline storage containers (approved to store and transport gas). Have a carbon monoxide detector in your home when using a generator. Use them only outside. Do not use gas or charcoal grills inside. Do not let pets or children in areas outside areas that have not been carefully surveyed for downed power lines. Make sure the food you eat is still good. Don't risk food poisoning. If there is a water pressure problem in your area, do not drink the water and do not use for teeth cleaning. Use bottled water. Stay away from power lines which are damaged. Report all downed lines. Do not assume all lines on or near the ground are without power. Do not walk in the dark. Use chain saws wisely, and never when tired. Watch for sewage spills and keep children and pets away from those areas.
